Why we Invented the Fruitless Tax

Why we Invented the Fruitless Tax

At LunchIn, we charge you 50 cents more if you want a lunchbox without a piece of fruit. That's right, you get less and you pay more. You pay what we call the "fruitless tax". When people first hear this, they don't think it makes any sense. And maybe it doesn't, but bear with us for a moment.

Healthy food is just too expensive...

We started LunchIn because we were frustrated with the lack of convenient healthy lunch options in town. All too often we found ourselves lining up for fast food. Why? It is quick, easy and cheap. And cheap is important. Unfortunately, healthy food is more expensive than fast food. Especially in Newfoundland, where we have limited access to fresh fruit and veggies, healthy food can be twice the price of a fast food sandwich combo.

"Healthy food is just too expensive for me" is one of the only excuses with some merit to it. That's why we want to eliminate the merit of that excuse completely. A lunchbox WITH fruit is cheaper. Period.

Why the fruit?

Research shows that eating a piece of fruit a day will lower your risk of a heart attack by 40%. That is a big impact. Because of that, we will run the risk of people ordering the lunchbox with a piece of fruit because it is cheaper and then throwing the fruit away. We run that risk because we know that along the line, we will convert people in to eating more fruit. And eating more fruit leads to healthier people, the reason why LunchIn exists.
